Long Distance Relationships

As most of you probably know, I’m engaged to the most beautiful and wonderful girl in the world. Deanna and I have had a long distance relationship (nearly 1,500 miles in between us) for as long as we have dated. There are obviously many challenges with the distance, and many people don’t like the idea of a long distance relationship.

As I was thinking about my relationship with my fiancée this thought came to me: how many people don’t want a long distance physical relationship, but have no problem having a “long distance relationship” with God? People want to be close to those they love, but don’t mind having some distance between them and God! Think of a few thing with me…

1) God thinks about us

Psalm 139:17 “How precious also are the thoughts of me, O God! how great is the sum of them.”

The Bible clearly says that God thinks precious thoughts of us! What a wonderful thought: the God Who watches all creation take time to think a “great sum” of thoughts about us.

2) God wants to be near us

God desires to be near us so much that He sent His Son to love a perfect life and die for us so we could be with Him in Heaven forever. I wrote a short post about this constraining love several weeks ago.

3) We should want to be near God

Psalm 73:28 “But it is good for me to draw near to God…”

The Psalmist echoes a cry that should come from our lips. We should say that “it is good” when we draw close to God! If God, the Creator of the Universe, wants to be near us, we should want to be near Him!

We want to be near those we love, and our God should he no exception. He’s done more for us than anyone else. If we’re going to contend for the faith, we must determine to have closeness with God!
